Be wary of giving and taking Health/Fitness advice

suffalist:

I have a friend who lost over 75lbs and because she lost that much weight she would often get questions on how she did it or how they can do it.  What I admired about her is that she would tell them what she did but then she would also tell them that they should consult with a personal trainer or nutritionist since she is neither of those.

This is why it’s so worrying to see people on Tumblr giving out certain kinds of health/fitness advice. There is nothing wrong with telling people what you did or saying what worked for you but then when the questions get too specific, you can say that you don’t know. On the flip side, people should also be more wary about who they get advice from, losing weight does not make someone an expert. Losing weight can be as simple as eating properly and exercising, especially if you were accustomed to bad eating habits and were sedentary for the most part. A huge part of it is determination, consistency and the motivation to reach your goals and this is the part that many bloggers can be and are great for because they have done it.

I’m going to give an example of some bad advice: a person asked a fitness blogger about squats, they said that the squats were building their legs (quads) rather than their butt and they want to get a bigger butt.  The blogger responded by saying that the only way to get a bigger butt is by eating a lot or getting butt implants. Well, I know that you can shape your butt and/or get a bigger butt by doing squats, deadlifts, bridges, hip thrusts, kettlebell swings and other exercises but it is how you do them, how often, how much weight you use as well as other variables including nutrition.  Chances are that the person asking for advice simply wasn’t doing the squats correctly (according to her specific goal of building her butt).

Be wary of the kind of advice you are giving out, nothing is wrong with saying you don’t know or to acknowledge that you don’t have the knowledge or expertise in a particular subject.  To those asking for advice, if you want to know questions specific to your own goals find someone qualified to give you the best answers.
